What Makes an Excellent Fishing Guide?

Fishing With a Guide If you’re planning on fishing in unfamiliar waters on an upcoming trip or trying a fishing technique like fly-fishing out for the very first time, you should consider hiring a fishing guide to help you. A fishing guide can help augment your experience and teach you a few tricks of the trade. However, before you hire a fishing guide, you should look for someone with a sterling reputation. Here are some of the characteristics that a great fishing guide will have.

Tireless work ethic

A great fishing guide doesn’t just go out on the water when they have someone paying them to do it. They’re out on the water all the time, learning new techniques and finding the best spots to fish. Some guides may try to get away with doing as little fishing as possible in their free time, and it shows! You want someone by your side who loves fishing and spends as much time as they can in and near the water.

In-depth knowledge of local waterways

In addition to working hard, a great fishing guide will also know the ins and outs of the local waterways. Regardless of whether you’re cruising around on a boat to fish or wading in the water to do it, your guide should know the best spots to find and catch fish. They should also be familiar with the types of fish in certain areas and be able to tell you everything there is to know about a particular lake, river, or pond.

Incredible problem-solving skills

There are going to be days when, for whatever reason, the fish just aren’t biting like normal. Your fishing guide shouldn’t get easily discouraged by this. Rather, they should show some determination and figure out how to find the fish you’re looking for. That might mean switching up the bait you’re using. It might also mean trying a new spot that could yield better returns. Whatever the case, your fishing guide should problem-solve on the job to make sure you have a great time.

  1. Thanks for great post I also want to mention, make a strategy of how you’ll fish the water you’ve approached. Take a bio assessment, check for insect activity. Try to spot fish in the water and observe their behavior. Are they actively feeding? Where in the water column are they suspended? Time their feeding pattern. This will make your casts more efficient.
